Set in the abandoned Santa Rosa cloistered convent and using locally harvested cork from the nearby trees, I Want to Speak to the Sughero was an interactive collaboration between myself and the Nurri community. Sughero, the Sardinian word for cork, is one of the most sound absorbing materials in the natural world, with millions of interior air pockets that collect surrounding sounds within the honeycomb structure. There is a difference between deflecting sound and absorbing sound. Cork absorbs sound. Using this idea, the project, I Want to Speak to the Sughero, invites participants to speak directly into the cork, where the voice is absorbed by the material and becomes a permanent part of the object, preserved inside, forever.
