Mothers 1-6

Mothers 1-6 is a collaboration with artist Guen Montgomery, created for a group exhibition at the SGCI Printmaking Conference in Atlanta. The six portraits are of the mothers of the six participants in the show. The transitory effect of their creation speaks to the powerful imprint of a mother’s role, while also recognizing the coinciding impermanence. The portraits were created by shifting the microfiber threads of domestic bathmats in opposite directions to create a contrast between the raised and lowered fibers of the surface. Tactile and vulnerable, each portrait can be erased by the single swipe of a hand, yet the honorary nature of portraits balances this urge and keeps the imagery preserved.
